Temporary City Istanbul

Este proyecto forma parte de un concurso-workshop que realizamos junto con universidades de Estambul, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Aachen… en colaboración.

En una primera etapa formamos equipos con estudiantes de diferentes universidades para el análisis urbanístico de la zona. El área a tratar se encontraba en Estambul, concretamente en el astillero de Halic. Hicimos un workshop allí para conocer de primera mano el lugar.

This project is part of a competition-workshop we carry out together with universities of Istanbul, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Aachen … together.

In a first step we form teams with students from different universities for urban area analysis. The treatment area was in Istanbul, specifically in Halic shipyard. All of us did a workshop there to get to know first hand the place.

Posteriormente al análisis urbano y puesta en común de las conclusiones con el resto de compañeros del workshop, nos dividimos en equipos de 1 u 2 personas. Con un presupuesto prefijado, teníamos que proponer una intervención efímera en el astillero, con motivo de la celebración en éste de eventos para Estambul, sede Ciudad de la Cultura Europea 2010.

Following the urban analysis and sharing of findings with other colleagues of the workshop, we divided into teams of 1 or 2 people. With a fixed budget, we had to propose an ephemeral intervention in the yard, on the occasion of the celebration in this event for Istanbul, home of the European Cultural City 2010.

Nuestro equipo estaba compuesto por Julia Rubio y por mí. El significado principal que notamos en la zona eran sus características escénicas y la posibilidad de empujar a algunos potenciales «puntos de etapa«. Pero no menos importante era la posibilidad de jugar con los niveles de agua dentro de las piscinas, la obtención serían dos resultados muy diferentes.

Our team was formed by Julia Rubio and me. The main meaning that we noticed in the area is its scenic characteristics and the possibility of pushing up some potencial “stage spots”. But not least is the possibility of playing with the water levels inside the pools, obtaining by this two very different results.

La parte frontal en el extremo de los astilleros parecían bellos marcos para colocar escenarios. Si se crea una escena delante de ellos, eso significa que los puestos van a estar en la superficie del agua. Para hacer esto posible, utilizamos una plataforma flotante anclada en la parte de abajo de las piscinas, que es el cuerpo principal de la instalación temporal. Esta plataforma será capaz de soportar a la audiencia de los shows y espectáculos, mientras que están rodeadas de agua. Sería aún mejor si esos espectáculos fueran llevados a cabo durante la noche, por lo que la plataforma podría estar rodeada por el ambiente de colores luces exteriores y las luces subacuáticas.
Fuera del tiempo de actuaciones, la plataforma podría también ser utilizada como una zona de recreo en una bonita escena urbana, caminar, sentarse… Incluso se propone la creación de un narguile–cafetería que funciona en la superficie de la plataforma durante el día.

The front at the end of the dockyards brings beautiful frames to place performing stages. If a scene is created in front of them, that means that the stalls are going to be on the water surface. In order to make this possible, we use of a floating platform anchored in the botton of the pools, which is the main body of the temorary installation. This platform will be able to stand the audience of the shows and spectacles while their are surrounded by water. It would be even better if those spectacles are carried out during the evenings, so the platform could be round out by the use of colour outside lights, and underwater lights. Out of the performing time, the platform could be also used as a recreation area in a nice urban scene, to walk, seat… We even propose the cration of a narguile-cafe which works in the surface of the platform during the day.

Una vez que las piscinas están vacías, el interior recuerda un poco la forma de un antiguo teatro romano, cosa que permite a las personas a reunirse en el interior, y asientos al hacer cualquier actividad. Por el uso complementario de las luces de colores, creamos un ambiente interno noche -club.

Once the pools are empty, the inside reminds slightly the shape of an ancient roman theater, wich allows the people meeting together inside, and seating while doing any activity. By the complementary use of the colour lights, we create an internal night –club atmosphere.

Después de todo el programa de actividades de Estambul 2010, proponemos otro uso muy diferente para los elementos de la instalación. Los elementos modulares que conforman la plataforma puede ser utilizada por la población local de una manera libre y personal, llevando alrededor de la ciudad y su uso como el mobiliario urbano.

After all the activity program for Istanbul 2010, we propose another very different use for the elements of the instalation. The modular elements wich make up the platform may be used by the local people in a free personal way, carrying them around the city and using them as urban fitment.
